Dubai, the jewel of the United Arab Emirates, is a city of dreams where modernity meets tradition, and where towering skyscrapers contrast with the vast, unending deserts. With its luxurious lifestyle, iconic landmarks, and a wide range of activities to choose from, Dubai offers an unforgettable experience for travelers. Of course if you're staying in Dubai you'll need a hotel - and I can really recommend the Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown - have a read of my review here. Have a read of the following post about the Top 10 things to do in Dubai!
1. Explore the Burj Khalifa
Any visit to Dubai should start with a trip to the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building. Standing at a staggering 828 meters, the Burj Khalifa offers breathtaking views of the city from its observation decks. Witness the stunning sunset from 'At the Top' and see the magnificent city lights at night. It's not the cheapest thing to do, but you'll never be higher in the world than you will be here whilst in a building!
2. Aquatic Wonderland at Atlantis, The Palm
Experience the magic of the ocean at Atlantis, The Palm, an extravagant resort on the Palm Jumeirah. Visit the Lost Chambers Aquarium and take a thrilling ride at Aquaventure Waterpark, where you can zoom down water slides or relax on the pristine beaches. It's got great restaurants in the area as well - but don't expect to get anything too cheap!
3. Desert Safari
A trip to Dubai wouldn't be complete without a desert safari. Head to the expansive Arabian Desert for an exhilarating experience. Ride a camel, go dune bashing, and end your day with a desert sunset and a traditional Bedouin-style dinner. These trips go from a number of different locations in the city and many of the hotels have deals with the operators who run these trips. They are an all day affair though, and make sure you pack the sun screen - especially if you're there in the summer as there is NO shade anywhere!
4. Visit Dubai Marina
Dubai Marina is a man-made wonder and a hub for trendy restaurants, boutiques, and a dynamic nightlife scene. Take a leisurely evening stroll along the picturesque promenade and enjoy the view of stunning yachts and skyscrapers reflecting in the waters. You'll probably feel very very poor but it's a must to get a true sense of the wealth that the city has to offer.
5. Visit Dubai Mall
The Dubai Mall is a colossal shopping and entertainment complex in the heart of Dubai. Spanning over 13 million square feet, it is one of the world's largest malls. It features more than 1,200 shops, ranging from luxury brands to traditional Middle Eastern markets, making it a shopper's paradise. Additionally, the mall houses numerous attractions like the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, an indoor ice rink, and a dedicated Fashion Avenue. You can get seriously lost here!!
6. Eating Out
You can't have a bad meal in Dubai! Dubai is a culinary paradise where you can savor an array of international cuisines. From lavish restaurants to hidden gems, Dubai offers a diverse range of dining experiences. Dine in style at Pierchic, a restaurant at the end of a pier, or indulge in a gastronomic journey at the iconic Burj Al Arab – an experience you'll remember forever. One of my favourite areas is the Time Out area just by the Burj. It's a great selection of street food from all around the world. Definitely worth a visit.
7. Journey to Old Dubai's Heart
Amidst the glitzy, modern skyscrapers, there's a hidden gem – the historic Al Fahidi District. Wander through the narrow, winding lanes of the Al Bastakiya area, and step into the Dubai Museum in Al Fahidi Fort to delve into the city's rich history. Don't forget to visit the Heritage and Diving Villages to get a glimpse of traditional Emirati culture. This part of the city is SO different from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the city. You really won't believe the difference that you will experience.
8. The Dubai Water fountains
The Dubai Fountain is a spectacular aquatic attraction situated at the base of the Burj Khalifa, in the heart of downtown Dubai. It's renowned as the world's largest choreographed fountain system, captivating visitors with its water displays. The fountains shoot water up to 500 feet into the air, and their performance is set to a diverse range of music, from classical to contemporary hits. The Dubai Fountain is a must-see, offering a stunning and immersive sensory experience that beautifully complements the city's opulence with a fantastic backdrop. If you time it right - you'll even get a great show at the top of the Burj Khalifa.
9. Dubai Souks
The Dubai Souks are vibrant marketplaces, offering a glimpse into the city's cultural heritage. The Gold Souk dazzles with intricate jewellery, while the Spice Souk immerses visitors in exotic aromas and a variety of spices. The Textile Souk boasts an array of fabrics. These traditional markets provide an authentic experience in a city known for its opulence, allowing visitors to haggle with friendly shopkeepers and sample local delicacies. Amidst the glittering modernity of Dubai, these souks offer a unique opportunity to connect with the city's roots and its rich trading history.
10. La Perle
Ok, so having worked in theatre and the entertainment industry for all my life, I'm quite partial to a evening in the theatre. However Dubai La Perle is a breathtaking live entertainment show that has redefined the world of theatre. Located in the heart of Dubai at Al Habtoor City, this state-of-the-art aqua theatre offers a one-of-a-kind immersive experience, only matched by the largest of the Vegas spectaculars. Created by Franco Dragone, the mastermind behind Cirque du Soleil, La Perle showcases a fusion of acrobatics, visual effects, and stunning choreography, all set against a backdrop of water and fire effects. With its cutting-edge technology and world-class performances, Dubai La Perle has become a must-see attraction, adding a touch of magic and wonder to the city's entertainment scene.
